What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Even patients who take exceptionally good care of their teeth can run into problems. Teeth can become discolored as a result of foods and drinks that stain them. In other circumstances, teeth can become chipped, cracked, or fractured which can lead to tooth decay and oral  diseases.

Repairing these issues is not very hard and, in the end, can leave you with healthier looking teeth. As Mountain Brook’s premier dental office, we can perform cosmetic dentistry and restore your smile to its former glory. Here are a few examples of the cosmetic dental services we offer at Over the Mountain Dentistry.

Teeth Whitening

One of the most popular cosmetic dentistry services we offer is Zoom! teeth whitening system. While do-it-yourself teeth whitening kits are available, they present many potentially harmful side-effects. For example, over bleaching can cause your teeth to become very sensitive.

These side effects are of no concern when you get your teeth whitened professionally at our Mountain Brook, Al office. The Zoom! teeth whitening method uses a gel that is activated under special lights and can result in teeth that are 7 to 10 shades lighter than before your appointment.

Dental Veneers

When you first meet someone, often times the first thing they notice is your smile. Because of this, individuals with cracked or chipped front teeth are often self-conscious about their smile. Luckily, there are dental veneers to help repair your teeth and restore your smile’s brightness.

Veneers are made of a wafer thin piece of dental porcelain and are bonded on the front teeth. Your natural teeth will need to be polished slightly so the veneer can fit snuggly. Once it has been fabricated, the veneer will be bonded to the tooth using dental cement. Porcelain is used to craft veneers because it mimics the light reflecting properties of teeth better than any other material. Additionally, porcelain veneers are even more resistant to stains than enamel.

Crooked or misaligned teeth used to require traditional metal braces to correct spacing or alignment issues with the teeth. These braces come with some baggage, though. For example, the metal brackets make eating and proper oral hygiene habits difficult, and can even get stuck to the inside of your gums. But luckily, there are Invisalign clear aligners.

These trays are made of an elastic thermoplastic material and are removable, making brushing and flossing much easier. You also don’t have to give up your favorite foods. When it’s time to eat just remove the tray and you’re good to go. Treatment time can also be greatly reduced with the average treatment period lasting a little more than a year.
